Sofia's Science Blog!! :D: March 2012

Heyy!! Well, obviously you know that it's me Sofia! And guess what? I am not going to be talking about atoms or why the earth is tilted, and no this is not the science show!!! It's the science fair!!

So, this is post 1 out of 3...... so, just keep checking my blog every now and then!! But, now that I got that out of the way, let's talk about the science fair. My science fair project is....... [ DRUM-ROLL PLEASE!!!!]

What liquid will best rust a nail??

Well, to be honest with you I kinda choose to do my project at the last minute, but the good thing is that all I have to do is just type the required things and decorate and buy a board and I'm done!!! My project was set for 5 days, but thank GOD it finished early!! Now, I have time to type you know!

I really want to tell you the results, but................ that will ruin the point of my project! Instead..... I guess I should tell you my hypothesis!! I used coke, lime juice, bleach, salt water, and just regular tap water and I think that the lime juice will win, because of the acidity in the lime!

You know, I chose this because when I was in 3rd grade and I had to do a science fair project, I did something similar to this and I got disqualified, because my project was late!!!! :p I mean I didn't even get a a participation ribbon!! But I decide that this year I decided to make my project harder and more advanced than what I did in 3rd grade!

I mean, I hope I do as good as I did last year considering that I got 1st place! But it really depends on who I am competing with! If we get but with the older kids...... I probably won't stand a chance, but if I get put with the younger kids I might have a good chance of winning something!

Even though my project won't be as complex as my friends or other my other class-mates at least I want a good grade on this!! This project is 20% of our grade!! I kinda am nervous...... with the judges staring at you! Just imagine you walk into to a room, going over your project in your head and keep telling yourself " You can do this, you can do it!!", then you reach your project that is surrounded by tuff and scary judges! Then they watch you as you try to remember as much as you can, ~~without~~ looking at the board, then they ask you a question where you don't know the answer to!!! I just can't help think about that!!

Part Two!!

Well, hi again!! Now, it's part two!!! And now I will just talk about how it was when I was doing my project!!! So...... enjoy the science fair blog!!

Well, like I said my science fair project that I decided to do this year is......

" What liquids will best rust a nail??"

And it was actually quite an easy project! It took a shorter amount of time than I thought it would take! I mean, the project was meant to take 5 days, but it took 3 days to find out 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th! I mean all you have to do is set aside 5 clear cups or containers and place steel or iron nails in the cups and pour the liquids into it!! But you need to take data!!

Then once you have done the project, you can use the scientific method to show the results and what you think! You know that the scientific method involves the Hypothesis, the Procedure, the Materials, the Variables, the Data, the Results, the Conclusion, and you must not forget to put your project title or purpose!! It was also a hard project to do at times considering that you have to watch the project every moment that you can!!! You need to take pictures and data! It was even more so hard because I was so busy!! But the good thing is that I got this done and I am ready to present....... I think! :D :D :D :D

But the good thing is, well I'm competing in the physical category with 4th and 3rd!! So, wish me good luck!! Part 3 to come.........

Finally, it's part 3!!! So, basically now I'm gonna talk about what it was like being judged! And believe it or not, we were supposed to present on Monday, but the judges we got at first were ridiculous! I mean after hearing what happened to some people and how my guy looked like he'd rather have is head smashed in a door than listen to my project they decided to re-do the science fair! The only question he asked me was: " So, you put one nail in each cup, right?" and that made me feel like a failure!! So, I felt better whenthey did that, but I still think I did bad!!

But, over all I think that my board was pretty cool!!! And it was an easy project so, I guess I'm pretty proud of what I did!! I have been doing this since 5K and I understand the science fair a lot better then when I did when I was in 5K and 1st grade!! The only thing is....... I wish that they still give out medals, but who knows they might!! I can't wait to hear the results!

Hey, hey, hey! It's me, Sofia!!! And finally, we can talk about mammals! The cool thing is....... WE are mammals! And, what's a mammal? Well, I will tell you that soon, but first I should tell you what we will be learning!! :D :D :D

Name 5 characteristics about mammals!
How their characteristics help the mammals!
How are placentals, monotremes, and marsupials different!
I will compare the reproduction of the 3 groups & talk about 1 mammal!

So, let's start with the 5 characteristics of mammals!! :D

Well, all mammals have hair or fur!
They all feed milk to their young!
They all have complex-nervous systems!
They all are endothermic, or warm-blooded!
And finally, they all reproduce with a mate!

So, now I think I should start talking about how those characteristics help!!

How they help them!!!

The hair or fur helps is by trapping air and keeping the animal warm and cozy!!! Some mammals like dolphins and whales have not a lot of hair, so they rely on a think layer of fat chub under their skin to keep them warm!! Porcupine quills and the spiky spines of a hedgehog are modified hairs that keep them protected from dangerous enemies!!

Obviously, the ability to be able to feed milk to their young is helpful by a lot!

It helps the kid mostly!! You know, it helps the kid grow and get the energy, nutrients, and vitamins to the animal!! With out the ability to give milk, nipples or no nipples, the kid would have a hard time growing up!!!

How the Groups are Different!

Well, for starters the 3 groups are...... the placentals, the monotremes, and marsupials! All 3 groups are very different! It won't take that long so here we go........

Placentals are the most popular group and even include us! They also give live birth to fully developed babies!!

The dog is a placental mammal!
Marsupials!! They are mostly found in Australia or some zoo's!! They actually give birth to very undeveloped babies and they crawl into the pouch that the Mom has and then they attach them selves to the nipple!

A kangaroo is a marsupial mammal!
Monotremes are the least popular group and to some, the ugliest group! Guess what? Well, monotremes lay eggs? So freaky!!

A platypus is a monotreme mammal!

How the babies are different!!

Well, I mostly explained it in the last paragraph, but I guess I will go over it again!! Let's start.......

1.Placental mammals give birth to fully developed babies, but still need their mothers care!!

2. Monotremes lay eggs...... but are still mammals!! Weird......

3. Marsupials give live birth, but the babies are undeveloped , so they crawl into the mom's pouch and then get milk from the mom, which is produced by the mammary gland, then grow developed in the pouch!!
