M-M-M-Mammals!!! :) :) :)

Hey, hey, hey! It's me, Sofia!!!  And finally, we can talk about mammals! The cool thing is....... WE are mammals! And, what's a mammal? Well, I will tell you that soon, but first I should tell you what we will be learning!! :D :D :D

  • Name 5 characteristics about mammals!
  • How their characteristics help the mammals!
  • How are placentals, monotremes, and marsupials different!
  • I will compare the reproduction of the 3 groups & talk about 1 mammal!

So, let's start with the 5 characteristics of mammals!! :D

  1. Well, all mammals have hair or fur!
  2. They all feed milk to their young!
  3. They all have complex-nervous systems!
  4. They all are endothermic, or warm-blooded!
  5. And finally, they all reproduce with a mate!

Do you want to learn more about mammals?? Click HERE to learn more about a special mammal! Is it killing you to know what is there?! Then click it!! :)

So, now I think I should start talking about how those characteristics help!!

        How they help them!!!

The hair or fur helps is by trapping air and keeping the animal warm and cozy!!! Some mammals like dolphins and whales have not a lot of hair, so they rely on a think layer of fat chub under their skin to keep them warm!! Porcupine quills and the spiky spines of a hedgehog are modified hairs that keep them protected from dangerous enemies!!

Obviously, the ability to be able to feed milk to their young is helpful by a lot!
It helps the kid mostly!! You know, it helps the kid grow and get the energy, nutrients, and vitamins to the animal!! With out the ability to give milk, nipples or no nipples, the kid would have a hard time growing up!!!

How the Groups are Different!

Well, for starters the 3 groups are...... the placentals, the monotremes, and marsupials! All 3 groups are very different! It won't take that long so here we go........

  • Placentals are the most popular group and even include us! They also give live birth to fully developed babies!!
The dog is a placental mammal!
  • Marsupials!! They are mostly found in Australia or some zoo's!! They actually give birth to very undeveloped babies and they crawl into the pouch that the Mom has and then they attach them selves to the nipple!
A kangaroo is a marsupial mammal!
  • Monotremes are the least popular group and to some, the ugliest group! Guess what? Well, monotremes lay eggs? So freaky!!
A platypus is a monotreme mammal!

How the babies are different!!

Well, I mostly explained it in the last paragraph, but I guess I will go over it again!! Let's start.......

1.Placental mammals give birth to fully developed babies, but still need their mothers care!!

2. Monotremes lay eggs...... but are still mammals!! Weird......

3.  Marsupials give live birth, but the babies are undeveloped , so they crawl into the mom's pouch and then get milk from the mom, which is produced by the mammary gland, then grow developed in the pouch!!

Time to talk about a mammal.....

Finally, I'm almost done and to end this blog I'm gonna talk about one mammal and that mammal is....... ( Drum-roll ) the brown bear!!

  • The brown bear is a omnivore!!
  • Can be 5-8 feet tall, even taller too!
  • Can weigh 700 pounds!!
  • It's a mammal!!
  • Travels in a pack called " sloth" or " sleuth "
  • They are fast and can run at 30 miles an hour, so don't make a bear mad!

Well, I guess that's the end of my blog...... come back next time to learn more sciency stuff!!! BYE!!! :D :D

It's a Social Studies blog on a Science blog!! :O

Hey everybody!! Guess what, this blog is not gonna be a blog about science! What you say, well as you know this month is Black History Month, so this is a social Studies blog about the Civil Rights Movement!!

But, my blog is not just about the Civil Rights Movement, I will also talk about how Abraham Lincoln was involved in the Civil Rights Movement!  This is really important to me because some of my friends are African-American! And, I would like to give credit to the websites who gave me this information and pictures, so I will have the links at the end of the pictures!
But here is the website for the "Hi!" at the top! So, anyways... ENJOY!!  :D :D (http://commentgraphics.multiply.com/photos/album/2584/Glitter_GraphicsText_3)

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKXRL5donlurRBUpP_fePn1g1g9VSIzJvK_GN4H-jLps3ToH3A3lXdB9xlVzAvSRVnMdpoSCFTxMpNKxzsFuwIethKGqORn6C15bgFoLFZ7kK5uBwXS1IKtS45BLTbyh-9PtKPR02TxJ0r/s1600/Civil-Rts-March-Clarence-B.-Jones1.jpg

                Civil Rights Movement!

Well, the Civil Rights Movement was when many African- Americans who wanted rights and didn't believe that they were treated they way that they should have been, did peaceful protests by getting in big crowds and hold up signs or screaming out what they want! Some people like Martin Luther King Jr. had gatherings when they would have supporters there to listen to his speeches.

People also protested for the end of slavery and the way that people looked, talked, and thought about them. They wanted to be treated like a white person was. They wanted to sit in the front of the bus, they wanted to sit in the front of the restaurant, and they wanted to be in the same schools as whites! I am glad that they did this, they did not deserve to have awful quality stuff while the whites got better and more awesome quality stuff!
http://www.drmartinlutherking.net/images/categories/speech/martin-luther-king-talking.jpg
African-Americans also were owned by whites. I really don't know what was going on in peoples minds back then , but really.... people owned people! African - American are not pets! They did NOT deserve to be owned, whipped, bossed around, and be treated like trash! Aren't you glad that slavery ended?!?

http://www.drmartinlutherking.net/images/categories/speech/martin-luther-king-talking.jpg
                      Abraham Lincoln!!
Well, Abraham Lincoln was our president during the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement! As you know, Mr. Lincoln was the 16th president and his nick-name was " Honest Abe ". But, we aren't talking about his life-story we are gonna talk about how he was involved in this war!
http://sc94.ameslab.gov/TOUR/alincoln.gif
Well, President Lincoln was getting lots of assassination treats during the Civil War, mostly the Southerners were giving these treats because the south was mostly a Democrat area and he was Republican. During that time the south tried to secede (Which means to leave the nation of the U.S.) and become their own country, but Mr. Lincoln didn't want that to happen so he announced the Pro-Union policy which did not allow the southern states to secede.

Then, on January 1, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. This was Mr. Lincoln's declaration of freedom for all slaves in areas of the Confederacy, not under Union control. But the south didn't like this because if the North won the Civil War, the south would have to let all slaves free. Speaking of the Civil War, on November 19, 1863 Mr. Lincoln gave his very famous Gettysburg Address, which he dedicated to the Union Solders who died. Then he ordered the living solders to finish the war that the dead started!

My
Opinion: I think that what Abraham Lincoln was so brave, honest, and a great man!! I could never do what he did! I can't believe that he kept our country together and won the Civil War! If it weren't for him, we might be in a different country than the north, you see this was very important! I never new what the Civil War was until now! And now I know it is extremely important, seriously he ended slavery, won the Civil War, kept the country together, and dealt with all the protests and president business He was such a good man!!

HEY! Did I forget something!? Oh yeah! I need to answer 2 questions for you about the 4-8 grade field trip that we went on last Monday! So, the questions are:
What did I learn? What did I like?

Question 1. What did I learn?
Answer: Well, I mostly learned about the Civil War and how slavery was like. We watched a little, short play about a slave owners wife, while she talked about how her slave ran away.
She told us that she doesn't want her husband to know this because slaves would get whipped if the slave ran away and was found, but she liked her slave and didn't want this to happen to the slave.

http://newsone.com/files/2011/04/Black-Civil-War-guys.jpg

We also learned how a solders life was like during the war. Like, we did a game where you got a clip-board and a spinner. Through out the game you could lose or gain life and morale points! The game was based on choices and luck! I ended up being alive and sane!

Question 2. What did I like?
Answer: What I really liked was when we played the game on the solders! Let me explain the game a little more than I did in the last paragraph. So, we got a clip-board that was about a solder, which could have been a Union solder or a Confederate solder, and I got a Union solder. Then it said how much money you had in your pocket, how much morale and life points you had, your reason why you joined the Army and other information about your person. So, like I said I was alive and sane, plus my side won! :D :D :D

So, I guess this is the end of my blog! I hope that you really enjoyed this..... unusual blog and I hope that you will come back to learn more next time!!! Bye! :D :D :D

*Tweet tweet* Birds!! *Tweet tweet*

Heyy! It's me Sofia, and guess what!?! I'm gonna talk about birds!! But before I do I must, and yes must explain what I am going to teach you about before I start! So, here it goes......

  • I will list 4 characteristics all birds!
  • The difference between contour and down feathers!
  • The official Georgia State bird!
  • How do their feathers, air sacs, and their skeleton help them fly!
  • Last of all, I will talk about one bird and and give you facts!

But anyways,  not all birds are so cute, sweet, and friendly!!

4 Characteristics about Birds!!

  1. Well, all birds have no teeth, so that picture up there is fake!
  2. All birds either have a beak or bill!
  3. All birds have feathers!
  4. All birds lay eggs!
Now, let's talk about the difference between contour and down feathers!

Contour feathers!!

Well, contour feathers are the most specialized of the feathers. Contour feathers form the outline of the bird's body and gives the bird a streamlined look! These feathers are on the outer body, wings, and the tail. These feathers are what gives a bird it's unique colors and patterns!

Down Feathers!!

So, down feathers make up the under plumage of a bird! They are usually are under the contour feathers and are mainly used to keep insulation for the bird in the cold winter days! These feathers are not " hooked " together like the contour feathers are and are numerous in ducks and other water birds! Some species of bird pluck the down feathers and use them to keep their eggs warm!

The Official Georgia State Bird!!

The official state bird is the.......................
BROWN THRASHER!!!

The Georgia State Bird :D :D

Feathers, air sacs ,and bones!!

Well, finally I can talk about how their feathers, air sacs, and bones help them fly! Did you know that birds feathers are curved down to help the fly better. It gives them lift and that's how it makes it fly better!!

Do you wanna know how the air sacs help?! They help by giving the birds fresh air and helps the lungs out a lot! The air sacs keep replenishing the lungs with air! So the bird won't get short of breath when flying!
Image Detail
Last , but not least here is how their bones help them out in flying! Birds bones are nothing like our bones! They are the opposite of ours! Yes, their bones are very strong, but they are actually HOLLOW! They are light, hollow, but strong bones! Teeth are bones too so that's why they don't have teeth, it will weigh them down and won't be able to fly very good or at all!

The Toco Tucan!!

Image Detail

Well, guess what time it is!? No, it's not adventure time, it's time to talk about one special bird and that bird is the Toco Tucan!! Yep, thats it's real name the Toco Tucan!!! What a funny name!! :D Anyways, as you know tucans have very colorful bill's and are lot's of colors! Most tucans live in Central and South America! So, with that let's start with the awesome FACTS!!! :D :D :D

Image Detail
  • Mostly live in Cental and South America!
  • They mostly live about 20 years!
  • They eat both plants and animals! (Omnivore!)
  • They live in trees!
  • They nest in tree holes!
  • Some people capture and keep them as pets!
  • Are very popular birds!
  • Fly in flocks of 6 or more!
Awww! Looks like it's the end of this blog!! Well, I hope you learned a lot about birds and the Toco Tucan! Leave me comments and come back to learn about more sciency stuff next time!! BYE! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Do YOU wanna learn about REPTILES!?

Hey!!! It's Sofia!! Today on my blog I am going to talk about The Characteristics that all Reptiles have in Common! Also, How are they Different from Amphibians!??!  Plus, I will name ALL the different groups of reptiles!!!!!  :D :D :D But, did I forget something.... OH YEAH!  I will describe each groups characteristics and tell you, yes YOU  about an animal from each group! So, are we ready to start learning?!? FYI, there are 4 groups so it won't take long!

Well, basically reptiles have scales, dry skin, lay eggs and sometimes, just sometimes they give LIVE BIRTH! To do that they keep the eggs inside their body and when the eggs hatch they come out alive not in a egg! Also, reptiles have ear holes, 4 or no legs, and  they are cold-blooded and did you know that dinosaurs were reptiles before they all died harshly!?! Well, they were reptiles and I bet you can see the resemblance! Moving on..... here are 5 main reasons why reptiles are different from amphibians.....

  1. Their are about 7,000 species of reptiles while there are about 5500 species of amphibians!
  2. Their skin is MUCH more scaly and dry than amphibians. Amphibians have ooey gooey skin.
  3. Their eggs are VERY different! Reptiles have leathery, hard eggs and amphibians have jelly like eggs.
  4. The purpose of each others skin is used in differently.
  5. They grow differently.
Well, now that I got that out of the way let's talk about the groups of reptiles! There are 4 groups of reptiles!
There names are: Crocodilians, squamates, testudines, and finally the sphenodontias! They all are groups of reptiles so the animals classified in the groups are not that different in general, but in appearance they don't look alike because a alligator and a chameleon don't look too much alike!! All groups have ear holes, dry skin, lay hard eggs, and are cold-blooded. Have you ever seen a chameleon before? I have seen on before when it wasn't camouflaged! I have seen it when my cousin had one, before it died....

The Groups........
  • One animal in the group crocodilians is a crocodile! Shocker! Crocodiles have large teeth and a powerful jaw! They live in swamps and rivers!
  •  One animal in the group squamates is a snake! Most people think that snakes are super scary and that's the same with crocodiles! There are HUGE snakes called Anacondas and  Pythons! They can swallow you whole!
  •  One animal in the testudine group is a turtle! They live in lakes, ponds, and rivers.
  • Last but not least in the group sphenodontias is a tuatura. Tuaturas live in New Zealand  and and are not very common!

Well, that's all for this blog and you learned a lot about reptiles! Come back soon to learn more about some more awesome science topics!! Byeeeee!! :D :D :D
